I'm more of an animal welfare supporter than animal rights, and it will ALWAYS annoy me when a rights supporter uses Peta as an example of the liberation.

Animal rights has been around for a long time, you can literally trace it back to ancient times and stories. [link]

So Peta isn't anything special in terms of bringing the topic to mainstream. Think about it, the spokespeople went from Da Vinci [link] to Voltaire [link] to Lewis Carroll [link] to even Mark Twan [link]

Now what do we have?

- A vice president that uses medication that was created through testing on dogs. [link]
- They support not only a convicted arsonist [link] but also violent acts against people that think differently than they do. Such acts include firebombing labs, harassing anybody that wears fur, etc.
- They extort women with their campaigns. [link]
- They target children and younger audiences with shock campaigns meant to "scare kids straight".
"Your Daddy Kills Animals" [link]
"Your Mommy Kills Animals" [link]
-A flat out kill shelter that they themselves run. On average they only successfully adopt out 3% of the animals that are brought under their care.

Things Peta is against
- Animal sports such as horse racing, rodeos, dog shows, hunting [link]
- Pets [link]
We at PETA very much love the animal companions who share our homes, but we believe that it would have been in the animals' best interests if the institution of "pet keeping"—i.e., breeding animals to be kept and regarded as "pets"—never existed.
- Service animals for the blind (Yes, that is real. [link] )
...we oppose most seeing-eye-dog programs because the dogs are bred as if there are no equally intelligent dogs literally dying for homes in shelters, they are kept in harnesses almost 24/7, people are prohibited from petting or playing with them and they cannot romp and run and interact with other dogs; and their lives are repeatedly disrupted (they are trained for months in one home and bond, then sent to a second, and after years of bonding with the person they have "served," they are whisked away again because they are old and no longer "useful").
- Zoos [link]
- Outdoor Cats [link]
- Predator Reintroduction [link]

And there's many more.

Even though I'm against animal rights, I can understand why a person would be behind it. But if that person is a Peta supporter then they automatically lose credibility. Animal rights activists like to compare themselves to groups such as civil rights movements or women's rights movements, but compare the two.

Didn't Martin Luthor King speak AGAINST using violence in protests and talk about how peaceful protests were the way to go?

In 1957, King was active in the organisation of the Southern Leadership Christian Conference (SCLC), formed to co-ordinate protests against discrimination. He advocated non-violent direct action based on the methods of Gandhi, who led protests against British rule in India culminating in India's independence in 1947.
[link]

So why would you compare that to an organization that supports throwing paint on people and FIREBOMBING labs?

If the animal rights movement wants to be respected and listened to more, then some serious changes need to be made. Either drop Peta or morph it into something more respectful and less hypocritical.

More moments where Peta activists have crossed the line.
- Purchasing a plot in a graveyard (the same that Kernel Sanders was buried) with a gravestone that protests the company and how they kill thousands of chickens per year.
[link]
- "The Holocaust on your Plate" which places photos of factory farms next to photos in a concentration camp. Keep in mind the family members and survivors of the Holocaust are still around and MIGHT not enjoy being compared to farm animals. [link]
- Billboards calling overweight women "whales" in an ad to try and get them to go vegetarian. [link]
- Using religious symbols to try and stop puppy mills [link]
- Peta targets religious groups. "If we are not able to bring the churches, the synagogues, and the mosques around to the animal rights view," he cautioned, "we will never make large-scale progress for animal rights in the United States."
[link]

If anybody has a news story of Peta being idiotic, feel free to let me know. Keep in mind though, it has to be REALLY offensive, I want to see people being outraged.

And about those morons going on about being vegetarian... it's not healthy to be stick-thin. I mean really, yes, it's not good to be overweight, but neither is being underweight just to be 'pretty.'

I know >.<

Animal rights should not mean "Total liberation" or *Zero to do with humans*

It means what it does for us, which is the right to certain things that THEY require and need.

The right to a decent place to live, the right to food and water, the right even for wild animals is important, movements already being fought against such as The right to not be shot/killed/used for something which is superficial/pointless, like the elephant tusks cut off and the animal left to die, for souviners. The right for wild cetaceans to not be captured in drives for circus routines in parks, where their needs are never ever going to be truly met. And the right to be returned to the water like it is agreed upon when they get washed and picked up, like in the case of sick Morgan...

Okay. Calling obese people "whales" and using controversial topics(religion, the Holocaust) to preach is definitely insulting.
